Methodologic Limitations of Prescription Opioid Safety Research: A Call for Integrated Data Systems and Modern Epidemiology

Speaker: Shabbar Ranapurwala, Research Assistant Professor, Department of Epidemiology, Gillings School of Global Public Health

In a review of 27 opioid safety studies cited in the CDC’s opioid prescribing guidelines for chronic non-cancer pain, the majority of the studies had limitations pertaining to internal and external validity. The CDC also acknowledges that the opioid safety evidence base is weak (grade 3 and 4). This presentation will highlight these limitations in the literature, their impact on the guidelines, and how integrated data systems and advanced analytic methods may help us navigate some of these issues.
