Inclusion of Older Adults as a Model for Special Populations

Purpose

To increase the inclusion of older adults in clinical and translational research. To this end, we will convene an expert workshop to identify gaps in knowledge regarding barriers to including older adults in clinical and translational research, assemble materials that describe best practices for the inclusion of older adults in research, and create and pilot workshops targeting three audiences:  clinical and translational researchers (e.g. ACTS meeting), subspecialist researchers (e.g. cardiology meeting), and regulatory experts (e.g. FDA). Ultimately we seek to develop and make available a comprehensive catalog of resources to diverse audiences. Funding would be needed for such an enterprise, as well as to pursue further dissemination activities: seeking this would be an additional purpose of the group. Utilizing the outputs of these activities, we will develop a template and methodology for creation of additional inclusion toolkits for other special populations.

Goals
Advance science, and initiate compilation of resources, to promote and facilitate the inclusion of older adults in clinical and translational research, and serve as a model for inclusion of other special populations.
