Abstract

The University of Florida and Florida State University Clinical and Translational Science Institute Hub (UF & FSU-CTSI Hub) through its partnership immediately launched a COVID-19 Taskforce, spanning both institutions. Taskforce working groups began addressing both local and hub issues covering: Laboratory Research; Clinical Research; Outcomes Research; Education & Workforce Development Solutions; Community Outreach & Engagement; Data Science & BMI; and Communications. Alongside institutional leaders, the respective CTSI leaders in collaboration with the Vice Presidents for Research, Deans and Directors, led the COVID-19 institutional response by developing and deploying guidelines to safely shut down and resume research, and launching a COVID-19 pilot program. Additionally, the UF CTSI deployed its unique statewide resources through the CTSI’s OneFlorida Clinical Research Consortium to launch 5 COVID-19 national studies. The UF Office of Clinical Research was a national leader in addressing the regulatory requirements to launch these and other studies. In addition, the UF CTSI launched a symposium series highlighting the funded pilot studies, expanding its services and resources within its Translational Workforce Development program, incorporating participation across the Hub. The FSU CTSI hosted Hub round table discussions to highlight collaborations and future developments in COVID-19 and mental Health; COVID-19 and Cardiovascular Disorders; COVID-19 and Health Disparities; and COVID-19 and Maternal-Child Health. To ensure that individuals who are traditionally underrepresented in biomedical research have opportunities for study participation, the UF CTSI also led the way with acquiring and deploying a mobile clinic for data collection. The UF & FSU CTSI Hub continues to lead the way with an expansion of its biorepository and other key resources to enhance individual and population health in response to the pandemic.
