  • New U-M Network-Based Research Unit Connects Researchers The COVID-19 pandemic has suddenly hit the world with a virus that we know almost nothing about. We don’t have a good understanding of how the virus affects people of different ages, races, medical conditions, etc. Many states are reporting only the most basic information, such as the number of deaths. The Network-Based Research Unit (NBRU) at the University of Michigan's Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR), working together with several regional and national research networks, has pivoted to work collaboratively on the Coronavirus pandemic by making COVID-19 patient data available to researchers.

  • The University of Michigan's Center for Drug Repurposing (UM-CDR) is taking on the challenge of finding a drug previously approved by the FDA – or more likely a cocktail of several drugs – to battle COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus. Assisted by artificial intelligence methods, the U-M team will begin screening all 2,400 FDA approved drugs and will extend screening to experimental compounds from a library of nearly 7,000 compounds in search of an antiviral drug or drug cocktail that is effective against COVID-19.

Or “Can HCQ reduce the severity of COVID infections in HCP?” said David Williams, PhD, Professor of Anesthesiology, and faculty lead of the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research 's (MICHR’s) new Network-Based Research Unit (NBRU).
