Registration is Open for the Insights to Inspire Webinar in July

Insights to Inspire 2020 highlights those hubs who have made improvements in their Careers in Clinical and Translational Research metric. The first in this year’s series of webinars focuses on diversity and inclusion.

Three hubs will present the strategies that led to their success.

  • The Medical College of Wisconsin will present their comprehensive approach to engaging more women and underrepresented persons (URP) in their TL1 program.
  • Duke University will share their strategies for reaching their goal of engaging more than 50% URP representation among KL2 scholars.
  • The Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai will present their Step Up initiative – an innovative post-doctoral TL1 program.

Announcing the new Common Metrics database – CM-PRISM

CLIC is developing a new CM database, CM-Program Results for Improvement of Strategic Management (CM-PRISM). CM-PRISM is specifically for the CTSA Program hubs to enter their data and TTC plans. CM-PRISM is built on a foundation of REDCap forms.

Hubs will continue to use Clear Impact Scorecard to enter their data for 2019. CLIC will be reaching out to pre-determined hubs to seek volunteers for testing the new database.

Why Diversity Matters

“We have lots of evidence that having a diverse workforce contributes to the excellence and creativity in solving complex and ambiguous problems.” Dr. Hannah Valantine, M.D., NIH Chief Office for Scientific Workforce Diversity.

The CTSA Program webinar on April 22nd focused on NIH’s activities for enhancing diversity and retention in the biomedical workforce. Dr. Valantine shared approaches to inclusive excellence and Pritty Joshi, Ph.D., Office of Extramural Research and Melissa Ghim, Ph.D. Office of Research on Women’s Health discussed how the K to R transition represents a particularly vulnerable career stage.

UPDATE for Median Accrual Ratio Expanded Pilot

Currently, hub’s efforts are being diverted to focus on the COVID-19 response. Many institutions have paused some research activities including recruitment. This will  skew accrual data and not provide us the opportunity to fully understand the capacity and resources required to collect data.

For these reasons, it has been decided to postpone work on the MAR expanded pilot until early 2021. We recognize the value and the importance of this metric.  This delay will allow for the collection of a more complete data set and increase the likelihood for a successful expanded pilot outcome.

The MAR Metric Page will continue to be updated as information becomes available.

While the CTSA Program is charged with accelerating and improving clinical and translational science, the potential impact of the CTSA Program is only partially realized, to date.

In order to maximize the CTSA Program consortium’s impact, NCATS has implemented the Common Metrics Initiative (CMI). The CMI is based on the principles of the Results-Based Accountability (RBA) framework and is a collaborative process with the CTSA Program hubs used to develop, implement and report on specific metrics that are common across the consortium. The vision for NCATS' CMI is to use specific, common metrics to demonstrate and improve the impact of the CTSA Program. The CMI uses this set of metrics to help focus network and hub activities on making significant, measurable improvements in translational science and research, and workforce development.
