Improving Standards, Practices and Processes

New York University’s (NYU) Clinical and Translational Science Institute has developed a strategy to conduct pre-reviews of studies before they are submitted to a full convened IRB. This new process was implemented in response to improving its scientific review standards and practices, as well as a means to maximize the resources at their institution. Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) recognized the need for a database that enables performance data to be shared openly, improves transparency and eases the administration burden on principal investigators and study teams. This new database was the result of an effort that was initiated to better define key performance indicators. From Insights to Action (FITA) is a compilation of strategies, approaches, and insights gleaned from 18 CTSA Program hubs that CLIC interviewed this year.

This resource is divided into six primary sections, each represents a strategy followed by a stimulating set of questions within sub topics. We encourage hubs to review this resource as an impetus for pointed discussions about equity, diversity, and inclusion. We hope that you are inspired to extend these conversations to your internal partners, as well as external partners, new collaborators and your local communities.

Why Diversity Matters

The CTSA Program webinar on April 22nd focused on NIH’s activities for enhancing diversity and retention in the biomedical workforce. Dr. Valantine shared approaches to inclusive excellence and Pritty Joshi, Ph.D., Office of Extramural Research and Melissa Ghim, Ph.D. Office of Research on Women’s Health discussed how the K to R transition represents a particularly vulnerable career stage.  To listen to this webinar, log into the CLIC website and access this link.

While the CTSA Program is charged with accelerating and improving clinical and translational science, the potential impact of the CTSA Program is only partially realized, to date.

In order to maximize the CTSA Program consortium’s impact, NCATS has implemented the Common Metrics Initiative (CMI). The CMI is based on the principles of the Results-Based Accountability (RBA) framework and is a collaborative process with the CTSA Program hubs used to develop, implement and report on specific metrics that are common across the consortium. The vision for NCATS' CMI is to use specific, common metrics to demonstrate and improve the impact of the CTSA Program. The CMI uses this set of metrics to help focus network and hub activities on making significant, measurable improvements in translational science and research, and workforce development.
